Citra Cryo Hops

Citra Cryo Hops® are the intensified form of one of the most iconic aroma hops in modern craft brewing. Developed by the Hop Breeding Company and released in 2007, Citra is known for its explosive tropical fruit and citrus profile. With lineage tracing back to Hallertau Mittelfrüh and East Kent Golding, Citra brings complexity and punch to IPAs, Pale Ales, and hazy styles. The Cryo Hops® format enhances all of Citra’s signature aromas while reducing vegetal content—perfect for dry hopping and whirlpool additions.

Citra Cryo Hops Overview

  • Flavors: Grapefruit, melon, lime, gooseberry, passion fruit, lychee, mango
  • Primary Usage: Aroma (also suitable for whirlpool and dry hop)
  • Best Beer Styles: IPA, Hazy IPA, Pale Ale, American Wheat, Sour Ale
  • Similar Varieties: Mosaic, Galaxy, El Dorado, Azacca

Background

Citra was developed by the Hop Breeding Company and officially released in 2007. Its complex genetic heritage includes Hallertau Mittelfrüh, East Kent Golding, US Tettnang, and Brewer’s Gold, giving it a multilayered profile with high oil content and intense fruit expression. Citra quickly became a staple in hazy and juicy IPAs. In Cryo Hops® form—processed using Yakima Chief’s LupuLN2® method—Citra’s bright tropical and citrus aromas are further amplified, providing brewers with a high-impact hop tool for aroma-forward beers.
