Nelson Sauvin™ is a unique dual-purpose hop variety from New Zealand, released in 2000. Named for its aromatic similarities to Sauvignon Blanc grapes, it imparts distinctive notes of crushed gooseberry, white wine, and tropical fruits. Its versatility allows it to be used effectively for both bittering and aroma additions in a variety of beer styles.
Developed by New Zealand's Plant & Food Research, Nelson Sauvin was bred from the Smoothcone variety and a selected New Zealand male. Its complex oil profile and moderate alpha acid content contribute to its distinctive flavor and smooth bitterness, making it a favorite among craft brewers seeking to create unique, flavorful beers.
