First Gold is a dual-purpose hop variety from the UK, celebrated for its balance of citrus brightness and classic English character. Developed at Wye College from a cross between Whitbread Golding Variety (WGV) and a dwarf male, First Gold delivers aromas of tangerine, marmalade, and orange peel, supported by floral and herbal undertones. With its compact growth habit and broad flavor appeal, it’s ideal for both traditional and modern styles.
First Gold was released in the UK as part of the Wye College dwarf hop breeding program. It was bred to retain the refined and pleasant aromas of English Goldings while providing compact growth and improved yields. The result is a hop with both aromatic finesse and flexibility, suitable for late and dry hop additions in a wide range of English and modern ales.
